What happened to our feet?

A 2023 study found a foot pain prevalence of 13-36% in the general population at any given time. That is an insane amount! This can be directly observed by the proportion of foot pain cases that walk into a general outpatient physiotherapy clinic on any given day. Then, these numbers do not even account for those of us whose ankle, knee, hip, or back pain is unknowingly caused by dys-functioning feet.

But why are our feet not functioning well? Like so many other dis-eases of today, it has to do with comforts, convenience, lack of pertinent education, and lifestyle. In relation to the feet, we are talking about the types of shoes that we wear and the amount of time that we sit. The evolution of footwear fashion and types of occupations have contributed to a normalization of premature deterioration of our musculoskeletal system— especially our base of support.

The way in which I share this is not meant to discourage you or cause fear and hopelessness! Luckily, our bodies are extremely maleable and adaptive to the inputs that they receive. The key, then, is to administer some different inputs consistently over time in order to create change that lasts.

why foot fix fundamentals?

This project is the first of many, born out of a strong desire to help demystify the musculoskeletal system and facilitate an understanding of how our vessel works. In this offering, we will explore our feet— the foundation of our body and locomotive connection point to the earth. We will tackle building a strong and resilient body from the bottom up because it is impossible to TRULY do so without a solid base of support.

AND, I want it to feel fun, understandable, and attainable along the way! By creating this as an online classroom, my hope is that you have more time and space to truly understand HOW your feet/lower body work, WHY certain lifestyle/movement shifts are recommended, and WHAT you can do on a daily basis (just 15 minutes a day) to eradicate your pain.

Getting rid of the pain in your feet for good is only possible when the HOW, WHY, and WHAT of the healing process are interacted with repeatedly and regularly. This emphasis on the understanding is often omitted during many traditional appointments with clinicians/doctors due to time constraints and limited availability of being fully present (due to excessive stress and burnout that we so commonly see in healthcare providers.. I used to be like that too), but it is the key to truly empowering us to independently take care of ourselves.

In creating this 3 month long container, my goal is to facilitate a safe and open space of learning, discussing, and moving for those who feel excited about the journey of building self awareness and creating sustainable, realistic habits that will benefit your feet, body, mind, and soul in the long run.

What you will get in this offering

3 hours of pre-recorded educational videos broken up into 11 lessons

  • We will cover topics such as the basics of foot anatomy, the function of pain, walking mechanics, footwear & aids, and, most importantly, corrective exercises with full body involvement and integration.

  • We will go over the most common foot ailments (bunions, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, hammer toes, claw toes, and flat feet) and why/how these have developed. My intention is to provide the information necessary to motivate lasting transformation of your feet and body.

3 months of direct guidance and support through office hour calls

  • I don’t want you to feel alone in your journey, therefore these weekly meetings are opportunity to connect with me and others in the cohort.

  • Bring your questions, concerns, and discussion curiosities to a respectful group container where guidance will be provided and we can celebrate your progress!

  • These 2x/week call opportunities will help to keep us accountable in our efforts to take better care.

My goal and intention is to provide enough education, support, and guidance that you feel confident in your ability to take care of your own feet for the rest of your life!

Who is this program for?

This 3 month long container is for you if:

  • You are committed to doing the work and taking responsibility for the health and functioning of your feet/body

  • You can afford this offering without jeopardizing your financial situation (please see sliding scale options)

  • You have experienced chronic foot pain (anything more than 6 weeks) and are ready to make a change

  • You were told you NEED to get surgery on your bunions without having tried a few months of a conservative approach first

  • You have bunions or flat feet, and maybe not pain in the feet, but pain in your knees, hips, or back

  • You have painful flat feet or bunions that are inhibiting you from doing the activities you love

  • You are curious about barefoot shoes but are scared of developing an overuse injury

  • You want to know more about how your body works and explore your beliefs about pain and dysfunction

  • You have to wear orthotics in all of your shoes in order to stand/walk/run without discomfort

  • You think your feet are gross and have detached yourself from this part of your body

  • You have tried various exercises that you see on the internet, but feel discouraged or fearful from the pain and discomfort that they caused, or just haven’t created consistency with doing them

  • You were told your foot problem is genetic and there is nothing that can be done about it

who is this program not for?

This 3 month container IS NOT for you if:

  • If you are unable to stand or walk independently/ your condition poses safety risks (if you have a caretaker who is dedicated to go through the program with you, physically by your side, this would be possible)

  • If you expect a quick fix to your foot pain (this course if for those who are ready to put in the small daily efforts to shift their foot function over months)

  • You have an acute injury (less than 6 weeks ago) with worsening pain (this could signify more serious damage that needs immediate medical attention). The offerings in this course are not medical. A disclaimer and liability form must be signed upon entry.

  • You don’t have reliable internet connection

This course is unique in that it is a multifaceted merging of up to 9 years of experience in working with people in pain— viewing chronic pain and dysfunction as a truly biopsychosocial and physical-mental-emotional phenomena. Therefore, the pricing of such an offering is challenging.

I want this to be financially accessible and still highly valued, so I am offering multiple tiers of payment.

  • The pre-recorded videos amass to a total of 3 hours of content. Alongside the videos, I encourage 15 minutes a day of engaging with the movements or other recommended “homework” activities.

    All this considered, we are looking at something like 2 hours and 15 minutes of engagement with the course per week (45 minutes of video and 15 minutes a day for the other 6 days of the week). This does not include jumping in on the optional office hours. Also, if you follow my recommended course calendar there will be 5 weeks of the 12 in which there are no videos to view— just continued 15 minutes a day of movement practice to be done.

    I understand that we lead extremely busy lives in these days, however, I would like to bring attention to the possible detriment to our well-being that perpetual busy-ness causes. This course is more than just education about the feet— I hope to reframe the way that we often think about our health in the westernized, modern world.

  • There will be set times every Tuesday and Friday in which you can log into a group discussion Zoom call. This is a video call in which you can choose to show your face or not. You can also choose to speak or not— there is a group chat option in which you can type out your questions and I can answer them live.

    During these calls, questions will be answered on a first come first serve basis. The call is 90 minutes long, and you can log on and off whenever you want.

  • If you would like, you can maintain complete anonymity by not showing your face or speaking. You will be able to type your questions in the group chat.

    You have the option.

    I do highly encourage showing your face and using your voice as an experience to feel seen, heard, and celebrated— something that does not happen enough in our technologically advanced and fast paced world. Although we will be connecting in a virtual space, I hope to help you feel acknowledged and safe by facilitating the conversation, weaving together perspectives, and normalizing our experiences.

  • The format of this course facilitates deep understanding and accountability due to the support that you have access to via two-times-per-week video calls. In this way, I am available to answer any questions, concerns, or complaints that arise. And/or just to talk about how hard it is to stay accountable; or how frustrating it is to not have been given this knowledge about our body earlier; or how f***ed up the western healthcare system can be; etc.

    True and sustained healing involves not only a physical approach, but a mental and emotional one as well. I welcome you to come, pull up a chair into the circle, and share your experiences so as to release suppressed thoughts and emotions around your health and well-being.
